On 7th March 2022, KEPSA CEO Ms. Carole Kariuki hosted the International Alert team, led by Mr. Rabindra Gurung – Country Director, Kenya & Horn of Africa Programme at KEPSA offices. The visiting team sought to understand how the business sector is responding to peace and governance issues and how they could leverage on the ongoing KEPSA initiative as they roll out their new ‘Business and Human Rights Programme’. In addition, the team was keen on understanding some of KEPSA’s work and how they could align to benefit from the ongoing programmes.
Sharing some of the initiatives that KEPSA has been actively involved in, with regards to peace and governance, Ms. Kariuki highlighted the experience and impact that the business felt during the 2007 post-election violence and the mediation role that business played to settle the scuffle among the political elite. She also talked of Mkenya Daima initiative since its inception in 2012 focusing on peaceful campaigns and transitioning and how it evolved in 2017 to include influencing issue-based campaigns and addressing the issue of leadership and now in 2022 with a focus on peaceful campaign and transition, leadership and public safety, and competitiveness – social amenities e.g. transport, health, integrity etc.
Mr. Gurung expressed his optimism in partnering with KEPSA, especially in their new Business and Human Rights Programme. In particular, he noted that KEPSA could benefit a lot in their research working to support some of her initiative. He indicated that the organization was open to more discussions to explore the partnership.
International Alert focuses on solving the root causes of conflict with people from across divides. From the grassroots to the policy level, it brings people together to build peace.
International Alert team noted that the organization has been active in Asia, Middle East, Great lakes region of Africa having established an office in Kenya in 2016. The organization has worked on projects in the mining industry and communities that portray peace factors. In Kenya they have worked at grass root level including working for 2 years in Turkana in partnership with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce in Turkana.
